Become a Tutor!

You can change someone’s life when you tutor for Literacy Link-Leamos. Our learners are adults and children who live in Grant County. Children in elementary, mid- or high school may be frustrated in school or working below their grade levels, and their parents or teachers want them to get help. Adults may want to work toward the GED, learn English, or learn how to read and write for the first time in their lives.

To become a tutor, fill out a volunteer intake form and a references form. New Mexico state law mandates that all tutors must pass a state-administered background check. To do this, fill out and have notarized an authorization for Literacy Link-Leamos to have the State run a background check. We do not have a notary public onsite at the Library, but most banks can provide this service. It takes one to two weeks for the State to respond to us after we send them your notarized authorization.

Our Program Director will interview you to find out about your teaching experience (if any), areas in which you’d like to specialize (reading, math, writing, basic computer skills, GED prep, etc), the type of learner you would like to work with, and the days and hours you’re available to tutor. Once you’re cleared by the State, we will match you with a learner.

All tutoring occurs in the Silver City Public Library, to provide safety for both tutors and learners. Tutoring hours are tied to when the Library is open to the public.

You’ll attend a New Tutor Orientation, and we provide both formal trainings and Meet N Greets throughout the year. New tutors can also be assigned a mentor—an experienced LL-L tutor who can answer questions or make suggestions. We have resources like books, worksheets, and handouts that you can use; we also have online resources and access to the Library’s new Digital Literacy lab (24 laptops).

If you have questions about becoming a tutor, stop in and talk to us, or call Jason or Mary Beth at the Literacy Link – Leamos office at (575)388-0892.
